To provide expert technical advisory and troubleshooting support on Advanced Process Control (APC) systems, and automation platforms across the processing plant. This role ensures high availability, integrity, and reliability of plants APC systems to optimize production performance, safety, and compliance. The Advisor plays a key role in control system optimization, digitalization of the process plants, upgrades, integration, and lifecycle management, while mentoring the advanced process control team.



Some of your duties will include:

1. Advanced Process Control (APC) Leadership:

Lead the development, implementation, and optimization of sophisticated APC strategies across the existing and new concentrator circuit (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, tailings), focusing on maximizing copper recovery, concentrate grade, and throughput.
Drive the integration of digital solutions, including real-time data platforms, digital twins, and AI/Machine Learning (ML) models, to enhance metallurgical control, predictive capabilities, and operational decision-making.
Champion the adoption of advanced analytics and prescriptive controls, leveraging large datasets to identify optimal operating parameters and proactively address process deviations.
Collaborate with IT and external technology partners to design, deploy, and maintain robust digital infrastructure and algorithms that support advanced metallurgical control, aiming for sustained improvements.
Oversee the development and calibration of soft sensors and virtual analyzers to provide real-time estimates of unmeasurable process variables for more precise control.


2. Metallurgical Performance Optimization & AI/ML Integration:

Assist the Digital Team in using AI and machine learning algorithms (e.g., neural networks, fuzzy logic, predictive modeling) to identify complex relationships within the process, predict future performance, and recommend optimal control actions.
Lead initiatives to leverage machine vision systems (e.g., froth cameras, size analyzers) and other sensor technologies for real-time process monitoring and control input, integrating these into the overall digital solution.
Conduct in-depth data analysis, leveraging statistical, diagnose complex metallurgical issues, identify root causes, and propose innovative solutions.
Assist in the implementation of "digital twin" models of key unit operations to simulate various scenarios, test control strategies offline, and train operators in a risk-free environment.
Ensure the continuous monitoring of AI/ML model performance, triggering retraining or recalibration as required to maintain accuracy and effectiveness.


3. Team Leadership and Capability Building:

Mentor, and develop high-performing metallurgists, process control engineers, data scientists, and control room operators, fostering a culture of innovation, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.
Provide expert guidance and training to the team on APC principles, digital tools, and the application of AI/ML in metallurgical operations.
Promote cross-functional collaboration with operations, maintenance, and technical services to ensure seamless integration of digital solutions into daily operations and problem-solving.
Ensure adherence to all safety policies, procedures, and regulations, integrating digital safety solutions where applicable.


4. Project & Modification Management

Support capital and sustaining projects involving control system upgrades, migrations, and integration.
Review control system design, programming, and commissioning activities in compliance with engineering standards.
Liaise with OEMs, integrators, and contractors during project phases.


5. Strategic Planning & Reporting:

Develop and execute a long-term strategic roadmap for metallurgical control and digital transformation within the concentrator.

Prepare and present comprehensive reports on metallurgical performance, APC system effectiveness, and digital initiative impact to senior management.
Translate complex technical information and data insights into clear, actionable recommendations for operational and strategic stakeholders.
Benchmark performance against industry best practices and global leaders in digital mining.


What skills and experience do you need?

Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. (Master’s degree preferred or considered an asset)
Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in metallurgical roles within a large-scale mineral processing operation, with at least 7 years in a leadership/supervisory role specifically focused on advanced process control and digital solutions in a copper concentrator.
Demonstrated expertise in the design, implementation, and optimization of APC systems (e.g., MPC, expert systems, fuzzy logic) in mineral processing. Metso OCS4D experience would be an asset.
Extensive hands-on experience with the application and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques in a live operational environment, including predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and prescriptive control.
Proven ability to work with and integrate diverse digital platforms and data sources (DCS, historians, LIMS, online analyzers, machine vision).
Strong understanding of data governance, data infrastructure, and cybersecurity in an industrial context.
Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data science (e.g., Python, R) and experience with relevant libraries and frameworks.
Expert-level understanding of process control, advanced process control (APC), control loop tuning, instrumentation calibration, and troubleshooting.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities; Effective communication, good interpersonal skills, and cross-functional collaboration with the ability to influence and drive change across various levels of the organization; Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and influence others in a multicultural, remote-site environment.
Good communication skills in English both verbal and written and computer literate.
